The Nihon Sumo Kyokai recently released the schedule for it’s summer jungyo or provincial tour. For those that don’t know, the provincial tours are exhibition basho that are held around the country between real basho. These exhibitions offer an exciting opportunity to get to meet the rikishi. It also helps to promote sumo as a whole. The August jungyo is the most extensive and covers Tohoku, Hokkaido and Shinetsu regions. Last year this tour was cancelled amidst the spate of scandals.
The following is the list of exhibitions:
Aug 4 – Asahikawa, Hokkaido.
Aug 5 – Obihiro, Hokkaido.
Aug 7 – Ishinomaki, Miyagi.
Aug 8 – Miyako, Iwate.
Aug 9 – Goshogawara, Aomori.
Aug 10 – Akita, Akita. More details
Aug 11 – Hanamaki, Iwate.
Aug 12 – Oe-machi, Yamagata. More details
I’ve always personally enjoyed the Akita gungyo. In 2008 I was lucky enough to meet and chat with Kaido Höövelson, before he was promoted to ozeki, and a young man by the name of Dolgorsürengiin Dagvadorj, a Mongolian Yokozuna who has since returned to his home country.
