I picked up this one at Nakano Shoten in Yuzawa, as I had tried the Corona and it was a nice enough stogy, so I thought this would make a good first smoke for the Aki Basho. I must admit I don’t have much experience with Nicaraguan smokes, so I was interested to see how it stacked up to mother Cuba.
The initial aroma smelled a bit leathery with some notes of cedar. This one lit up like a champ and was a nice easy pull with a perfectly even and slow burn. The flavor hit me straight up taking no time to warm up, lots of earthy notes. Some leather, cedar, and a slight hint of pepper. As I smoked the cedar started to become more defined but there was never too much bite. As with all Robustos I tend to worry about the length of the burn. I lit this one up just before Makuuchi started and it lasted me all the way through musubi no ichiban, it burned very evenly with a nice firm ash. I enjoyed this one with some Tamnavulin 12 year straight up. The mellowness of the Tamnavulin was a nice match for this smoke, which has a medium and mellow feel that develops nicely as you smoke. If you’re looking for a nice easy smoke with a nice free pull, don’t be scared to go Nicaraguan.
